The Bernie J. O'Brien Education Fund

The Bernie J. O Brien Education Fund
McMaster University

Bernie O Brien was an internationally renowned health economist who built and led a worldclass research team to study the cost-effectiveness and cost-utility of health care interventions. He was a pioneer in medical decision making, especially in assessing the benefits and costs of health technology. He received many national and international awards for his outstanding work and held a prestigious Senior Investigator Award from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Bernie was a professor in the department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University, and an associate of the Centre for Health Economics and Policy Analysis (CHEPA) at McMaster. He was director of Clinical Effectiveness Research for the Father Sean O Sullivan Research Centre and associate director of the Centre for Evaluation of Medicines at St. Josephs Healthcare Hamilton. He was also the founding director of the newly established Program for Assessment of Technology in Health (PATH). To honour Bernie and his outstanding contributions as a leader and innovator in the field of health technology assessment, his family, friends, former students and colleagues would like to establish a Bernie J. O Brien Education Trust Fund at McMaster University. To remember Bernies enthusiasm for supporting and mentoring young researchers in his field, the endowment will be dedicated to the support of a post-doctoral fellowship or a graduate student bursary in health economics and clinical-effectiveness research at McMaster.
